What inspired the Massage Pad Heatsense for horses?

With massage already helping horses all over the world, it felt natural to add the next best thing – heat! Heat that is reliable, tested and targeted at safe recommended therapeutic temperatures (42 degrees Celsius).

How can massage and heat benefit horses?

Our horses work hard for us, and there is a lot of pressure on their muscles through exercise. Massage and heat are two simple ways to support healthy muscle function in our horses.

Benefits of massage:

  • Helps to maintain healthy blood and lymphatic circulation.
  • Prepares muscles for exercise.
  • Soothes tired muscles.
  • Supports post-exercise recovery.
  • Promotes relaxation.

Heat:

Heat is non-invasive, gentle and well-accepted with many associated benefits including:

  • Maintaining good oxygen supply to the muscles.
  • Muscle relaxation.
  • Increasing tissue flexibility and elasticity.
  • The use of heat is a good way to help sensitive horses who may find massage too intense.

Research suggests that tissue temperature needs to rise by at least 3-5 °C from resting temperature (Bockstahler et al, 2004). Among several other sources, AAEVT's Equine Manual for Veterinary Technicians by Martha Mallicote, University of Florida, et al states: ‘Heat should be applied at 40-45°C for 15-30 minutes, resulting in vasodilation and increased blood flow.’

Who is the Massage Pad Heatsense for?

The Massage Pad Heatsense is beneficial for all horses and ponies, including:

  • Horses on box rest, to maintain good circulation.
  • After exercise to support recovery.
  • Before exercise as part of a warm-up.
  • On training trips to relax after travel.
  • On your horse’s day off as part of a maintenance program.
  • Any time as a reward.

Heatsense is available in one size, designed to fit horses from 155cm at the wither and above.

What is it made of?

The Massage Pad Heatsense is made from polyurethane (PU) and has a foam padding. The PU exterior makes the product very durable but also hygienic – which is ideal if it is shared among several horses and ponies. It is water and grease resistant. This material combined with the padding also makes it comfortable for the horse.

The six massage motors are located in targeted areas for horses and ponies. There are two on either side of the wither, two in the middle section of the pad, and two in the saddle area. The careful design of the massage pad facilitates the spread of massage to the back muscles.

The heating element is located in the hind quarter of the Massage Pad and heats a gel pad, which in turn heats the horse. This ensures the heat is evenly and consistently distributed. It also acts as a safety gate. This part of the Massage Pad also has a sensor to ensure the horse does not overheat, for example when using the pad in warm weather or after exercise when the horse is naturally warm.

How do I care for the Massage Pad Heatsense?

The Massage Pad Heatsense only needs to be wiped down with a lightly damp, clean cloth if the material becomes dirty. For battery and charger care, please refer to the safety instructions supplied with them.

Warning! Do not use in the following cases:
  • Open wounds, recent injuries or new swellings (within the first 48 hours).
  • In the presence of suspected infections or malignant tumors.
  • Burns or deep vein thrombosis.
  • On the abdomen during pregnancy or at all during the first trimester.
  • Causing circulatory disorders, causing hypo- or hypersensitivity to heat.
  • Active bleeding, bruising or hematoma.
  • Do not use more than one session of heat therapy at a time on the same horse.
Battery life:

The Heatsense battery, offering top-tier performance, can provide up to ten effective heat and massage treatments. This equates to five hours of use. However, in extremely cold conditions, this may reduce to eight sessions.

To preserve the battery's longevity, we recommend unplugging the battery from the lead after every use.

After ten heat and massage treatments, we recommend recharging the battery, ensuring the Heatsense can deliver heat therapy at the required temperatures.
