The Fager Mattias is a good choice for horses that meet the following criteria:

• May be worried about multi-jointed bits but, on the other hand, become too stiff with straight bits.
• Reluctant to soften to the bit.
• Requires encouragement to seek and maintain a steady contact.

• Can become unstable in contact.

Mattias is a double-jointed sweet iron bit with a special locking function. The mouthpiece is shaped to facilitate tongue movement, but it simultaneously locks upwards, which can be a good option for horses with a low palate and sensitive bars or corners of the mouth, but which still need tongue relief.

However, the bit does not lock forwards like a normal locking bit, which means you don't get the same stiff feel as with a straight bit. The position of the joints relative to the tongue provides softer and more even pressure on the tongue. This can be a good option for horses that may overreact when you take up the reins and need steady contact in all movements. The sweet taste, together with stability, encourages the horse to seek stable contact towards the bit. Also excellent for jumping if you want a calmer bit with a braking function for a sensitive but sometimes hot horse.
