What material should I choose for my bit?

The world of bits can be quite a jungle, and navigating it can feel like an endless quest for horse owners. We want to ease the burden of buying a bit by offering diverse rental and fitting services, and we also want to provide you with tips for purchasing a bit and understanding the anatomy of the right bit.

Let's start our guide by going through the materials of the horse bits that are available in our selection.

What is the difference between the materials?

TITANIUM
Titanium is valued for its low density, high strength, and corrosion resistance. All titanium bits from Fager are quality-checked and made from 100% medical-grade titanium, ensuring you can benefit from all the material's excellent properties – especially in a way that is safe for your horse.

Titanium is a tasteless metal for horses, which naturally adapts to the mouth's temperature and thereby encourages the horse to accept the bit and feel more comfortable with it. We generally recommend titanium bits for sensitive-mouthed horses that may react to other metals or develop allergic reactions from them, such as sores, chafing, or constantly red mouth corners. Titanium gives a very light feel in the rider's hand and a faster response compared to a heavier bit, especially when a suitably shaped anatomical mouthpiece is found for the horse.

SWEET IRON
Sweet iron is a rusting, flavored coating on the bit. The purpose of the coating is to mask the taste of the bit's actual material, stainless steel, and create a more pleasant, sweet taste that encourages the horse to seek more contact and lean into the bit. After use, the sweet iron coating begins to oxidize when it comes into contact with moisture and turns brownish-grey, which is completely normal for the material. The more the coating oxidizes, the more "sweet" taste is released. The bit remains usable even if the blue coating wears off over time.

GEL
Winderen Gel Bits System bits are made from durable synthetic gel, a comfortable material that horses easily accept. The gel surface is highly resistant to destruction caused by chewing, provided the bit is correctly fitted to the horse's mouth anatomy. The synthetic gel used in Winderen bits has been thoroughly tested and proven completely safe for horses. It has FDA certification, which is an internationally recognized proof of high standards, quality, and safety. This means your horse can safely chew on a Winderen bit without any adverse effects from the material.

Gel bits are often suitable for sensitive horses that have difficulty relaxing with a metal bit or, for example, if the horse is allergic to bit materials.
